Newspapers and magazines constitute a good portion of what the UA discards. Studies show paper makes up as much as 61% of The University of Arizona waste stream. Our recycling efforts, therefore, are concentrated on paper. Each year we recycle about 120 tons of Newspaper & Magazines. The Wildcat and Tucson Weekly are distributed widely on campus, and many departments receive subscriptions to newspapers and magazines.
What We Recycle
Newspapers, inserts, magazines, and brown paper bags can all go in newspaper recycling bins.
How We Recycle
Containers can be provided to building occupants. It is the responsibility of each container recipient to empty them into outdoor centrally located bins. These bins are large and green. They are located at…
- Main Gate
- McClelland Hall / Law Building
- Esquire Apartments
- Harvill back parking lot
- Main Library back parking lot
- Centennial Hall / Social Sciences parking lot
- Recycling Yard
- Franklin
We will be adding more locations when construction is finished in some areas. Cluster containers and blue bins are also scattered in all main traffic areas of campus for newspapers and magazines. Please contact us for more information on newspaper and magazine recycling. All green bins are emptied by our vendor, Recycle America. All cluster containers and blue bins are emptied by our staff on a regular schedule.
Where Does It Go?
Our Newspaper & Magazines are taken to the Recycle America yard at Prince and I-10 to be weighed, sorted, baled, and shipped. The paper currently goes from there to Abitibi Consolidated in Snowflake, AZ where it is made into blank newsprint.
