Recycling and Waste Management StatisticsBelow are some brief statistics describing the current state of recycling and waste on campus. Please contact us if you have any questions. Diversion Rate The diversion rate tells us how much material we are diverting from the landfill into recycling and reuse. It is a percentage of total trash on campus. Our current diversion rate is about 14.4%. The national average diversion rate for colleges and universities is about 22% (College and University Recycling Coalition). Actual Numbers Our Annual Report gives the exact amounts for all materials recycled, how much revenue we received, and totals for the above as well as money saved to the UA through landfill tipping fee avoidance. In Fiscal Year 2002/2003 our total tonnage was 827,098 tons (over 16 million lbs.). Our landfill diversion savings (how much money we saved in avoiding landfill tipping fees) was $23,158.00. Our total income was $17,218.12. Therefore our total "worth" last year (adding the landfill diversion savings and income) was $40,376.86. Last year the UA threw out 4935.18 tons of trash (does not include contracted construction debris). An average of 37 lbs of material was recycled, 220 lbs of trash thrown out per person. This equals 257 lbs of waste created per person on campus. For more in-depth figures please refer to our Annual Report. To get current figures, please contact us. What Are The Savings?
